Mine makes the sound of the starter gears when the engine rotates backwards when it doesn't complete a compression stroke on shut down. It must be normal as my Yamaha TW200 does the same thing. There is a one way clutch in the starter assembly to prevent the starter from over revving and destroying itself when the engine starts. When the engine stops and then rocks backward slightly, it makes a gear engagement noise. No hammering or metal on metal type noises though. If the engine dies as indicated maybe your idle speed is set to low or you need to use the choke a slight bit longer.
